The University of Ghana Sports Directorate has partnered with the Ghana Tourism Development Company’s Tourism Campus Office to organise guided tour experiences for participants after sporting tournaments hosted on campus.
The partnership is aimed at enriching the tournament experience by giving athletes, officials, supporters, and visiting delegations an opportunity to explore the tourism potential of the University of Ghana and selected attractions beyond the playing field.
Under this initiative, participants who visit the University for sporting events will not only compete or support their teams, but will also be introduced to the rich history, architecture, culture, and scenic beauty of Legon. The tours will highlight key sites on campus, including iconic landmarks, green spaces, cultural facilities, academic heritage sites, and other areas of tourism interest.
The collaboration reflects the growing importance of sports tourism, where sporting events are used as a platform to promote destination experiences, local culture, recreation, and visitor engagement. By linking tournaments with tourism activities, the University of Ghana Sports Directorate and GTDC are creating an opportunity to transform campus-based sporting events into memorable visitor experiences.
The GTDC Tourism Campus Office will play a key role in packaging and coordinating these tours, ensuring that participants enjoy well-structured, informative, and exciting experiences after their tournaments. This will also help position Legon as a vibrant academic, cultural, recreational, and tourism destination.
The initiative further supports GTDC’s vision of reimagining academic spaces as tourism assets while promoting domestic tourism, campus tourism, and experiential travel. It also opens opportunities for students, alumni, sports lovers, tourists, and institutional groups to appreciate the University of Ghana beyond academics and sports.
Through this partnership, the University of Ghana is set to strengthen its identity not only as a centre of academic and sporting excellence, but also as a destination with strong tourism value.
