The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), as part of efforts to expand tourism offerings within the University of Ghana, Legon, has undertaken a familiarisation visit to selected sites on campus, including the historic tower observatory located within the Vice-Chancellor’s residence.

The visit forms part of GTDC’s broader vision to position Legon as a unique tourism destination, with its rich blend of history, architecture, culture, education, nature, and scenic landscapes. Beyond its role as Ghana’s premier university, Legon presents significant tourism potential through its iconic landmarks, green spaces, museums, halls of residence, cultural institutions, and historic facilities.

A key highlight of the visit was the tower observatory, which rises approximately ten floors high and offers one of the most remarkable elevated views within the University. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the Accra plains, with panoramic scenes stretching across the city and, on clear days, extending towards the Akuapem–Togo ranges.

The purpose of the visit was to assess how the tower, together with other attractions within the University, could be preserved, refurbished, and integrated into a structured Legon tour experience. The team also explored how the campus can be packaged to offer tourists, students, researchers, alumni, and visitors a deeper appreciation of the University’s history, landscape, academic heritage, and cultural identity.

This initiative reflects GTDC’s commitment to reimagining academic spaces as tourism assets. By positioning Legon as a tourism destination, GTDC seeks to create an experience that connects education, heritage, architecture, nature, storytelling, and recreation.

When fully developed, the Legon tour experience has the potential to become a major addition to Ghana’s urban tourism offerings, with the tower observatory serving as one of its iconic highlights and elevated viewpoints.
