The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Professor Kobby Mensah, has held discussions with Madam Tshegofatso, a South African tourism official from Cedarleb Africa, on potential tourism partnerships between Ghana and South Africa.

The meeting focused on exploring opportunities to promote travel between the two countries by encouraging more South Africans to visit Ghana while also creating avenues for Ghanaians to experience South Africa.

During the engagement, Professor Kobby Mensah provided an overview of the history and structure of Ghana’s tourism sector. He explained the role of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the various agencies under the Ministry, and the specific mandate of GTDC in promoting tourism investment, infrastructure development and tourism-related services.

The discussion further explored the profile of travellers who could be targeted for the proposed partnership. It was observed that many young South Africans are sometimes hesitant to travel due to concerns such as accommodation, cost and other logistical arrangements, compared with Ghanaians, who were described as more willing to explore international destinations.

Both parties considered the possibility of developing exchange travel programmes for university students in Ghana and South Africa. The conversation also identified opportunities within the South African business community, particularly among corporate travellers and golfers who may be interested in curated tourism experiences in Ghana.

Professor Mensah highlighted Ghana’s upcoming 70th Independence Anniversary as a major opportunity to attract visitors from South Africa through specially designed heritage, cultural and leisure packages.

Madam Tshegofatso also mentioned a women’s foundation in South Africa that will be celebrating its 70th anniversary next year. She proposed that a special group tour to Ghana could be organised as part of the foundation’s anniversary activities.

Professor Mensah assured her that GTDC was capable of delivering high-quality and professionally coordinated tourism services, including accommodation, transportation, tours and other customised experiences.

The meeting concluded with plans to undertake a tour of the Central Region, where Madam Tshegofatso would have the opportunity to experience some of Ghana’s major heritage and tourism attractions.
