The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) has taken a significant and forward-looking step toward repositioning academic spaces as viable tourism destinations with the establishment of its first Campus Tourism Office at the University of Ghana, Legon.

This pioneering initiative forms part of GTDC’s broader strategy to identify, develop, and package untapped tourism assets across the country. By situating a tourism office within one of Ghana’s most iconic academic institutions, GTDC seeks to transform the university campus into a structured visitor experience that blends education, heritage, culture, and leisure.

The new campus tourism office will serve as a coordinating hub responsible for curating, organizing, and promoting the diverse tourism opportunities that exist within the University of Ghana. From guided campus tours to heritage storytelling and cultural exhibitions, the initiative is expected to present the university not only as a centre of academic excellence but also as a vibrant cultural and historical destination.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Professor Kobby Mensah, explained that the idea was inspired by the realization that many educational institutions in Ghana possess rich tourism content that has not been fully structured or marketed.

“There is more than enough content here,” he noted. “What we need is coordination, effective packaging, and a deliberate strategy that allows visitors to experience the university in a meaningful and organized way.”

According to The CEO of GTDC, universities around the world have successfully integrated tourism into their institutional identity by opening their campuses to visitors interested in architecture, history, culture, and academic life. The University of Ghana, with its expansive landscape, historic buildings, museums, and vibrant student culture, presents a similar opportunity to attract tourists, researchers, alumni, and curious visitors.

The establishment of the campus tourism office followed a series of strategic engagements between GTDC and key stakeholders within the university community. These included discussions with the University of Ghana’s Public Affairs Directorate, the Office of the Dean of Students, and several faculty members who expressed strong interest in developing a structured tourism framework for the campus.

These consultations highlighted the shared vision of transforming the university environment into an experiential learning and cultural tourism destination while preserving the academic integrity of the institution.

The campus tourism office will therefore focus on organizing, marketing, and monetizing the university’s unique tourism assets. Among the highlights identified for tourism development are the iconic Balme Library tower, one of the most recognizable landmarks on campus, the University of Ghana Archaeology Museum, which houses important artifacts that tell the story of Ghana’s early civilizations, and the Institute of African Studies Museum, a treasure trove of African cultural heritage.

Additionally, the Department of Performing Arts will play a central role in the tourism experience by showcasing Ghana’s rich traditions in music, theatre, dance, and storytelling through curated performances and cultural showcases.

Beyond these key attractions, the initiative also seeks to highlight the broader campus environment — including its serene green spaces, historic halls of residence, cultural monuments, and student-led creative activities positioning the University of Ghana as a living cultural ecosystem.

Through this initiative, GTDC hopes to establish a model that can eventually be replicated across other tertiary institutions in Ghana. Universities, polytechnics, and training colleges across the country possess unique histories, architecture, cultural traditions, and research centres that can contribute to Ghana’s growing domestic and international tourism offering.

By integrating academic institutions into the national tourism value chain, the Ghana Tourism Development Company aims to create new visitor experiences, expand tourism education, and generate additional economic opportunities for campuses and surrounding communities.

Ultimately, the Campus Tourism Office at the University of Ghana represents more than just a physical office; it signals a new approach to tourism development in Ghana one that recognizes that knowledge spaces, heritage institutions, and centres of learning can also serve as powerful gateways into the country’s culture, history, and identity.
