The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) has taken centre stage in the official launch of the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon, positioning the event as a powerful tool for driving sports tourism, inclusion, and national pride. Scheduled for July 26, 2025, the marathon will start and end at Independence Square in Accra, transforming the capital into a vibrant showcase of athleticism, unity, and human spirit.
As a key partner and promoter, GTDC is championing the marathon as more than just a sporting event. Speaking at the launch, The CEO of GTDC, Prof. Kobby Mensah, announced plans for an eye-catching sports parade featuring athletes aboard a double-decker bus a creative initiative aimed at spotlighting the beauty and energy of Accra. “We’re set to showcase the capital like never before, making this marathon one of the most exciting on the global calendar,” he said.

The event will feature two inclusive categories: a 42.2km Full Marathon and a 10km Race, both open to wheelchair participants. “Inclusion is not optional; it’s fundamental,” noted Dr. Adae, adding that the event supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with Ghana’s vision for inclusive growth through tourism and sport.
Absa Bank Ghana, the headline sponsor, reaffirmed its commitment to social impact. Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, the bank’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director, described the marathon as a “Force-for-Good”, with proceeds going toward kidney dialysis treatments for underprivileged patients, athlete development, and youth empowerment.
