The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Professor Kobby Mensah, has set the pace for youth-focused international tourism as students from the University of Ghana embarked on an educational tour of Togo and Benin.

Organised under GTDC’s Campus to Countries initiative in collaboration with the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), the international tour took place from 31 July to 2 August 2026.

The three-day experience offered the students an opportunity to travel beyond Ghana’s borders and explore the history, culture and everyday life of neighbouring West African countries.

In Lomé, Togo, the students visited notable locations including the Grand Marché d’Adawlato, the Independence Monument, the Palais des Congrès de Lomé and the International Museum of Art. These visits gave participants insight into the country’s artistic heritage, commercial activities and national history.

The journey continued to Benin, where the group explored Cotonou and the historic city of Ouidah. Their experience included visits to the Temple of Pythons, the Slave Route, Ouidah Port, Ouidah Basilica, Ouidah Beach and the Memorial of Remembrance.

Participants also visited Dantokpa Market and the Statue of the Amazons, gaining a deeper appreciation of Benin’s culture, history, trade and the significant contributions of women to the country’s heritage.

For some participants, the journey marked their first international travel experience. It introduced them to different languages, currencies, cuisines and traditions while providing valuable lessons in cultural exchange, responsible travel, adaptability and regional cooperation.

Under the leadership of Professor Kobby Mensah, GTDC continues to champion innovative tourism programmes that make travel and experiential learning more accessible to young people. Campus to Countries reflects this vision by connecting students to destinations within Ghana and across the African continent.

The collaboration between GTDC and the UGSRC also demonstrates the important role partnerships can play in promoting youth tourism and extending education beyond traditional academic environments.

Through Campus to Countries, GTDC is nurturing a new generation of African travellers who appreciate the continent’s diverse heritage and recognise tourism as a powerful tool for education, unity and development.
