A delegation of carnival organisers from Brazil, accompanied by a translator and veteran Ghanaian actress and tourism advocate Akofa Edjeani Asiedu, has held discussions with the Ghana Tourism Development Company on Ghana’s possible participation in the world-renowned Rio Carnival.

The proposed collaboration would create an opportunity for Ghanaian dancers and cultural performers to showcase the country’s rich heritage on one of the world’s biggest carnival stages.

During the meeting, the delegation outlined the requirements and financial commitments involved in participating in the festival. They explained that participating groups would be expected to present a dramatic and culturally engaging story through dance, costume and performance.

In response, the Chief Executive Officer of GTDC, Professor Kobby Mensah, proposed that Ghana’s performance could centre on the country’s 70 years of independence, presenting its history, culture, struggles and achievements to a global audience.

Discussions also focused on how the participation could be financed. The possibility of securing corporate sponsorship from companies such as Kasapreko Company Limited was raised, with sponsors expected to benefit from brand visibility and promotional opportunities during the carnival.

The visiting delegation indicated that the total cost of participation could reach approximately US$2 million. Professor Mensah, however, noted that the proposal had arrived relatively late, as many potential sponsors would already be concluding their financial and budgetary commitments for the year.

Despite the timing and financial challenges, Professor kobby Mensah expressed GTDC’s willingness to support the initiative by providing an official endorsement letter to assist the organisers in approaching sponsors and other relevant institutions.

He further proposed that a press launch should be organised to formally announce the initiative, create public awareness and attract the needed corporate and institutional support.

Ghana’s participation in the Rio Carnival would provide a major platform to promote the country’s culture, tourism and creative arts while strengthening cultural relations between Ghana and Brazil.
