The leadership of the Tour Guides Association of Ghana (TORGAG)  paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Prof. Kobby Mensah, to explore ways of deepening collaboration and innovation within Ghana’s tourism industry.

The TORGAG delegation began the engagement by congratulating Prof. Mensah on his appointment as CEO, commending his visionary leadership and commitment to transforming Ghana’s tourism landscape. They also sought to understand GTDC’s plans for the Association under the new administration.

In his remarks, Prof. Kobby Mensah emphasized that GTDC’s mandate is anchored on innovation, efficiency, and support for the tourism value chain

He assured the Association of GTDC’s commitment to providing the necessary support to strengthen their operations especially through the Ghana Tourism Marketplace (GTM), a digital platform designed to connect tourism operators directly with consumers.

He explained that the President’s broader initiative under the Black Star Experience seeks to align all tourism-related activities under a universal events calendar and the GTM would be the necessary platform which solely features a diverse range of events, tours and curated experiences.

The GTM now becomes the primary means of hosting and showcasing these experiences, serving as a universal calendar that connects tourists, operators, and destinations across the country.

He therefore encouraged all tour guides to register on GTM, create their professional profiles, and upload details of their expertise and availability. This, he said, would enhance visibility, coordination, and access to new opportunities within the digital tourism ecosystem.

The meeting also touched on the importance of training and professional development. Both GTDC and TORGAG agreed on the need to design a comprehensive framework to mentor young tour guides and promote industry excellence. Prof. Kobby Mensah further suggested collaborating with the University of Ghana to integrate new academic findings into Ghana’s tourism narratives, ensuring that guides remain informed and up to date.

TORGAG raised concerns about sanitation issues affecting major tourism zones, particularly in Accra, citing the poor state of bus terminals and fuel station washrooms. They proposed a multi-stakeholder dialogue “Let’s Talk About Accra” to bring together key agencies responsible for sanitation, security, and public services to address these challenges collectively.

In response, Prof. Kobby Mensah reiterated GTDC’s readiness to support such initiatives and announced plans to establish a working committee in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), to periodically engage relevant agencies and coordinate sustainable solutions.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both GTDC and TORGAG reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing Ghana’s tourism agenda through innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
